The towering St. Olaf’s Church is one of the most symbolic buildings in Tallinn – if you add it to whichever fantasy image depicting a landscape of roofs, it will instantly become Tallinn. Also seen on the image are the city walls and on the right side, one of the most famous towers, the Fat Margaret, which earned its name both with its circumference and the thickness of its walls. The tower is a part of the Great Coastal Gate, where you can reach the main Pikk Street directly from the harbour and through which ran almost all of the trade exchange in Tallinn. Even today, a person arriving to Tallinn by boat can choose this gate to begin their old town tour, even though the sea has shifted a little further from where it used to be due to land uplift.
