Beato took many of his scenic views following the course of the historic Tokaido Road, a great highway linking the shogun capital of Edo (present-day Tokyo) with the imperial capital Kyoto and the city of Osaka. In this image featuring the mountainous landscape of Japan and its pine forests, Beato had his porters pose on the wooden paths to create a sense of immediacy.
