  • Description: Paolo Anesi, who was trained by the Florentine Giuseppe Chiari and the Roman Ferdinando Fregoni, also shows Venetian influences in his work. His paintings were sought by Italian patrons and also by foreign travelers, who came to Rome on their Grand Tours. Among the most famous Roman artists of the eighteenth century, Anesi was one of the favorite painters of Cardinal Pozzobonelli, who bought at least four of his works depicting specific locations in Rome, as in the case of this painting, but also other places that are less characteristic of the city. The representation of the Milvian Bridge is interesting because the Bridge remained as it appears in this painting until 1805, when the right side and the tower were restored. The subject, which was popular in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, was also depicted by Van Wittel, although from a different point of view. This painting, along with View of the Roman Countryside, has the words “Paolo Anese fecit 1703” on the back, but this date has not been accepted since Anesi’s first artistic works date back to 1712.
