Since the establishment of the Portuguese ground in Macao in the mid-16th century, the city experienced great prosperity as one of Portugal's regional cities. The Portuguese influence can be found in this cityscape painted in the mid-19th century. It shows Macao as seen from its South Port. Penha Hill is seen on the left while the Saint Dominic Church is shown on top of the mountain on the right.
