The windows he studied generally looked out onto a seascape, and they were a way for the artist to juxtapose the indoor and outdoor worlds. In View through a Window, Nice, a small wrought-iron balcony serves as a barrier between the setting and choppy waters of the French Riviera beyond. The worlds are further separated by Dufy’s strong use of color, employing only warm tones for the interior and cool blues and greens for the exterior.
