The Column of Victory in the park at Blenheim Palace was built in 1727-30. It was erected for Lord Herbert to designs by Nicholas Hawksmoor to celebrate the military victories of the Duke of Marlborough. It comprises a fluted Doric column forty-one metres (135 feet) tall, supporting a lead statue of Marlborough portrayed as Caesar. The column was inspired by the pillar in the Piazza Navona in Rome.
