John Baptiste Camille Corot was a leading figure in the Barbizon school of French nature painters. He enjoyed painting in the open air, a technique later embraced by the French Impressionists. Known for his generous nature, he trained many successful young artists, including noted Impressionist Camille Pissarro.

Originally owned by Longfellow's brother-in-law Thomas Gold Appleton, a well known patron of the fine arts and member of Bostonian society, the painting was given to Longfellow's daughter Alice, who lived in the family home all her life.
