Alice Austen took this photograph of Violet Ward and friend lounging outside of Clear Comfort in an intimate pose. These women were a part of Alices female-centered world. In 1896, Violet Ward wrote and published a book entitled Bicycling for Ladies. Alice's photographs were used as the reference for the book's illustrations. (See Alice with Bicycle, 1897.)
