Violin

This violin entirely presents its original conditions, with the exception of the varnish. The instrument was re-varnished in 1940 in Bisiach's workshop in Milan. The back, sides, neck and headstock are in maple. The sound board is, as usual, made up of two spruce boards. An unusual material, precisely baleen, has, instead, been used for the black part of the purfling. Before focusing entirely on the construction of string instruments, Stefano Scarampella was a carpenter. In 1902 he inherited the workshop of his brother Giuseppe (1838-1902), whose student he had been as written on the label inside this violin.
