Scottish-made violins have a mixed reputation. There are some high-quality instruments but also others made by less-experienced makers. This instrument is not of the highest grade – some of the woodwork is not well done and it has some shortcuts, such as inking on the decorative lines rather than inlaying wood. However, it has clearly been played a lot as the stain on the fingerboard is wearing off and it has numerous repairs. It has a sweet tone, which is perhaps why someone clearly enjoyed playing it.
