A spectacular building acts as the backdrop to this scene, as was common in artworks of the 15th and 16th centuries. The Virgin and Child are sitting peacefully in a lush garden surrounded by a small wall, on which they are sitting. It is common to see these kinds of seats, covered with leaves and plants, in 15th-century Flemish paintings. Behind her is a fortified building with a wall walk supported on a blind arcade. This type of background was common among the Brussels school of painters.
