Virgin

The sculptor Jordi de Déu worked professionally in the second half of the 14th century and the early years of the 15th, becoming one of the principal figures of Catalan Gothic sculpture. He was born in Greece and was a follower of the master Jaume Cascalls. His son, Pere Joan, was also an important sculptor. Jordi de Déu worked in the monastery of Poblet, Tarragona and Barcelona. Part of his work was done inside the old boundaries of the diocese of Vic, in Cervera and in Santa Coloma de Queralt. This image is considered to be by him as it presents some of the most characteristic traits of Jordi de Déu's style. He is also attributed with the image MEV 378 that shows Anne standing with the Virgin Mary as a child, which might come from Vallfogona de Riucorb and might even have been the main image in a stone altarpiece dedicated to the Conception of the Virgin commissioned to Jordi de Déu in 1385, as Pere Beseran points out.
