Visitor Centre Entry Courtyard

The Shrine Visitor Centre Entry Courtyard has the words Lest We Forget etched into one wall, with the opposite wall featuring a quote from Sir William Deane’s speech made on Anzac Day 1999, when he was Governor General of Australia. Reddish brown boarded walls symbolise the revetment of trenches dug in jagged fashion; colour reflective of the mud of trenches and battlefields of Belgium and France. Walls also represent the steep cliffs of ANZAC Cove. The red shapes near the entrance to the Visitor Centre represent red poppies, the first living thing to grow on the ravaged battlefields of Europe at the end of the First World War.
