Volcanic eruption

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt
Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Inside of volcanoes, magma (i.e., molten rock) rises to the surface and solidifies upon extrusion. Especially along the outer edges of the earth’s plates, numerous volcanoes are lined up, as is the case in Central Germany: Along the Rhine Valley, volcanoes erupted again and again during the past 50 million years. Well-known examples include the Messel Volcano, the Vogelsberg or the Laacher See Volcano in the Eifel, which erupted for the last time a mere 13,000 years ago.
