About the Work: Artist Fernanda Brunet’s work is inspired by Japanese
illustration, pop artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, comic
books and the deconstructive language of abstract
expressionism. Usually working in painting, Brunet uses
a palette of colors limited to pastels, and often gives her
works titles that are onomatopoeic Boouumm!,
Kraaaash!, Splop!, Snap, which give her work sexual
connotations especially related to the female body.
Just like her paintings, the sculptural work Volcán /
Volcano, 2006, depicts the eruption of a volcano that
evokes the volcanic landscapes of modern Mexican
masters such as Gerardo Murillo “Dr. Atl” and David
Alfaro Siqueiros, as well as Asian traditional landscapes
and contemporary Manga. The flowers that ornament
the cloud of the eruption are made of migajón, a
material made from bread crumbs that resembles fine
porcelain and that is traditionally used in Latin America
to create bridal and quinceañera bouquets, wedding
favors and figurines.
