Volition is made from pieces of strip steel cut into varying lengths. It is both an ode to, and evolution of, the art
movement Minimalism. One of the key ideas of Minimalism is that each artwork should refer to itself by using
strict geometric forms as opposed to traditional painting or sculpture that refers to an outside idea or narrative.
Mathison puts this geometry into tension by varying the length of each coil and allowing elements such as wind and rain to alter the surface of the work: the patina of rust will evolve over time. Through the use of strip steel, an important product of steel manufacturing, Volition references the extraction and refining of natural materials, which underpins the South African economy.
