Voysey chair

National Museums Liverpool
United Kingdom

Oak chair with leather seat and back splat pierced with a heart shape, designed by C.F. A. Voysey in about 1902. This chair is very typical of the work of C.F. A. Voysey. He was an English architect and designer working in the ‘Arts and Crafts’ style of the late 19th Century. The Arts and Crafts movement was a reaction against factory production and the elaborate designs of the Victorian era. The hand-made chair is of a simple design, ensuring that its appeal comes from the grain of the oak wood itself. Voysey created the interiors for two houses in Oxton, on the Wirral, Merseyside in about 1905. The chair comes from one of these.
