The Shepherd on the Hill

This masterpiece of Cotman's late style was painted in an experimental mix of watercolour and flour paste. This blend was intended to give the watercolour a density and depth of colour closer to the qualities of oil paint.

As in his best work, the composition is simple and clearly organised. It is combined with a vigorous interpretation of light and shade, to express the stormy movement of the sky.
