BUILDING SHIPS FOR THE MERCHANT NAVY. E.M./MCN. British shipyards are launching merchant vessels with all possible speed; a 10,000 tonner now gets its last coat of paint only 5½ months after the keel-laying. Widespread use of pre-fabrication has helped this speed- up and welding instead of rivetting has saved time and steel. This series of pictures taken at a shipyard shows ships in various stages of completion in the stocks. At the present rate of progress it will not be long before these same ships are on active service for Britain. Photo shows:- Shipyard workers returning to work are dwarfed by the giant hull of one of our new ships in stocks. FOX. 19th March, 1942. 271129.
