Waist Belt

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

This is a woman's waist belt with three rows of cowrie shells. Women thread the shells on the shaped leather strip often using plant treads. It is worn by women who have just given birth to tighten their belly. It is used as a ceremonial ornament especially during marriage and initiation ceremonies and also for mediating fighting between parties or people.
