Waist skin

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

Two pieces of waist skin(aprons) made by a man for his wife from goat skin with hair scraped. The pieces are stitched together with cow sinew using a metal awl. The front apron(engobo) and back apron(enkurugi) are smeared with red ochre mixed with cow fat to make the skin soft. Traditionally kisii men make skin clothes for their women unlike most ethnic groups where skin clothing is made by women.
