Thomas Jefferson owned this walking stick for twenty years before bequeathing it in his will "to my friend James Madison, of Montpelier." Following suit, Madison left the piece, made of rhinocerous horn with a gold cap and tip, to Jefferson's grandson "in testimoney of the estseem I have for him as from the knowledge I have of the place he held in the affections of his Grandfather."
