Walking sticks from the time of the Hambach Festival. Travel was made more difficult by bad roads, accidents, and ambushes. The attendees of the Hambach Festival came from different backgrounds, which can also be seen from their clothing and accessories. Many of the visitors belonged to the property-owning and educated middle classes, for example merchants, wealthy master craftsmen, doctors, and lawyers. Smallholders, winemakers, skilled workers, day laborers, and servants also made their way up to the castle.
