This group of steel figures are part of the Walking Together Mining Memorial at Markham Vale in Derbyshire, which commemorates the 106 miners who died in disasters at Markham Colliery in 1937, 1938 and 1973. This photograph shows a group of figures draped in purple sashes for their unveiling in summer 2020. The figures were designed by sculptor Stephen Broadbent and fabricated at CB Arts.
The figures symbolise the coal miners walking between Markham Colliery and the nearby village of Duckmanton, where the miners lived. The silver figures represent miners walking to the colliery to begin their shift and the dark figures represent miners returning from the colliery, black with coal dust.
