Hartford-born artist Sol LeWitt was a pioneer of Conceptual Art, which places importance on the idea, rather than the finished art object. Painted directly on the walls by studio assistants, according to specific instructions from the artist, this wall “drawing” was designed for the space. The curved bands of alternating color blocks respond to the architectural details f the stairway, playing off of arches and various swirls and circles in the ceiling, walls, and balustrade. Sol LeWitt was the featured artist of MATRIX 3, 6, and 143 in 1975 and 2001.
