Percy Sladen was born in Halifax, on the 30th June 1849 to a prosperous leather merchant Percy went first to Hipperholme Grammar School and to Marlborough College becoming a classical linguist. His hobby was natural history at a time when the discoveries of Charles Darwin were dominating scientific thought. He made a lifelong study of marine life creating a collection of immense zoological value.
