An accomplished amateur violinist and Master of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, it was said that businessman Walter Wilson Cobbett (1847–1937) 'devoted to commerce what little time he could spare from music'. Cobbett's particular interest in chamber music led him to set up several prizes for the study and composition of chamber works at the RCM.
