Hurtado is a multi-faceted talent who has worked in painting, film making, and teaching journalism. His series Signs of the Zodiac won a national award in Venezuela in 1961 and he has worked in French television. By 1970 he had moved to Washington DC where he produced documentaries on other artists for the Organization of American States. His started as a boy mentoring with artists in his village who painted the land around them. Since then, he says landscape has always given him a special freedom where he can focus on light and shadow.
