Lukova created War and Peace for an exhibition of her work in Baltimore, Maryland. The idea for the image came from reportage about an Iraq war veteran she saw on television. He was learning how to walk with a temporary prosthetic leg, which looked similar to a bird cage. The artist drew a dove in the cage as a powerful metaphor about the heavy toll of war and fragility of peace.
