This Wari vessel depicting a man playing the panpipes came to The Field Museum after the close of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Field Museum archaeologists continue to lead expeditions to the Peruvian highlands. Their goal is to learn more about the Wari, who built a vast empire during a time of drought. Studying their culture helps us understand the nature of empire-building states and sheds light on the rise of the later Inca.
