During the Roman Iron Age, urn burials were the typical kind of burial for Germanic people. As a rule, the burned grave goods were also deposited in the urn. The peculiarity of this case is that this warrior’s weapons – a wooden shield (discernible by its shield boss), sword and lance – were buried beneath the urn. The disintegrated wooden shaft of the lance originally rose out of the earth, thus marking the grave. The sword grip was intentionally bent; this rendered the weapon unusable.
