Short Biography: Jean Kotze-Louw was born in 1929 in Lichtenburg in the North West Province. She studied fine arts from 1947 to 1951 at the University of Natal and after winning the Emma Smith Scholarship in 1950 she continued her studies in Italy, and France. Between 1958 and 1960 she began her career as an academic as a lecturer in mosaic at the Positano Art Workshop in Italy. In 1975 she became a lecturer of Visual Design and Painting at the University of Pretoria. She published an article on Byzantine mosaic artworks in 1968 and research that became a large part of her later artworks.
