The Third Battle of Ypres began on the 11th of July with a week long artillery bombardment of German front line positions. Spanning July to November 1917 the offensive would see Australian Divisions playing a role in the battles of Menin Road, Polygon Wood, Broodseinde, Poelcapelle and the First Battle of Passchendaele. Despite repeated acts of bravery and heroism and the achievement of almost all of the planned objectives, the offensive resulted in only small gains of territory for the allied forces and no foreseeable breakthrough in the stalemate on the Western front.
