Tran Luong (1960) was born in Hanoi, Vietnam and graduated from Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1983. Together with Ha Tri Hieu, Pham Quang Vinh, Hong Viet Dung and Dang Xuan Hoa, they are collectively known as the Hanoi 'Gang of Five'. Luong's inspiration stems from his childhood staying in the countryside. After his residency in New York in 1996, Luong decided to venture into the field of installation and performance art, as a refusal to be commercialized. Now, Luong travels extensively, participating in international workshops and exchanges, obtaining support for his curatorial projects. Luong's art is inspired in a large part by his childhood experiences. Deprived of toys in the countryside he passed his time by a pond and thus developed a fascination for the teeming life underwater. A recurring motif in this series of works on water is the eye which alludes to the assistance he and other children received from the villagers during the war.
