Both male and female water deer have no horns. Males have upper canine teeth, which protrude from their mouths. They are four-toed. Over time, the first toe gradually disappeared, and the second and fifth toes became shorter. When water deer walk, their second and fifth toes do not touch the ground. Their body is small, and their legs are long and thin. Young water deer have a camouflaged coat with light spots in parallel longitudinal lines, but this pattern disappears with age. They live in the foothills or banks of the mountains below the middle of the mountain, willow fields, silver grassy wastelands, and grassy forests. They change habitat according to the season. They feed on a variety of herbaceous species. Mating usually occurs in December. Females give birth to up to 2~6 young at a time in early June. In the early evening of rain or fog, they come down to farmland near hillsides and pick up crops. Due to the recent increase in the number of populations, it can also damage crops in mountainous areas. It is distributed throughout Korea and northeastern China.
