The main scene represents a gruesome episode from Book 24 of the Iliad. The body of the Trojan prince Hektor is being dragged around the tomb of Patroklos. From the gates of Troy, at left, Hektor's royal parents, Priam and Hekuba, look on in horror, as the vengeful Achilles mounts his chariot. At right, emerging from the tomb bearing his name, the winged spirit of Patroklos hurries forward to see the desecration of his killer's corpse. The winged goddess in the foreground may be Iris, the messenger of the gods.
