Children of every generation develop a fascination for the large fire trucks they see racing down their city streets. Many kids decide at one time or another that they want to be firefighters when they grow up. Toy manufacturers have fueled such ambitions with toy versions of the pumpers, hook-and-ladder trucks, fire-patrol wagons, and steam engines of municipal fire departments. The toy vehicles of the 19th century looked like the horse-drawn wagons and carts racing to a fire. Later fire-fighting toys resembled the motorized vehicles that began replacing horse-powered wagons by the 1920s.
