In the summer of 1885, Gauguin stayed in Dieppe, a coastal town in the Normandy region, and he depicted the scenery of Varengeville-sur-Mer, a farm village on the outskirts. The fine diagonal brushwork used on the leaves of the trees in the foreground is influenced by artists such as Pissarro and Cézanne, and is in the Impressionist style. On the other hand, one can see signs of Gauguin's later style in the strong color contrast of the red and green, as well as the methodology used to clearly delineate the voluminous shapes of the house and the cows with broad brushwork.
