The Wave consists of some five hundred individual suspended light orbs, points of presence brought to life through light and sound. Together they create a resonant and dynamic audiovisual experience — a sustaining soundscape within which each orb resonates in changing harmonies to create an entrancing experience. The work continues Squidsoup’s ongoing research into themes related to natural elements, particularly water. Each orb is an autonomous sensate unit, consisting of LED lights, a speaker and a microcomputer, with a movement sensor and wireless connectivity. All the orbs together create a walkthrough immersive experience: 500 points of light, 500 voices, interconnected using Internet of Things technology, act in choreographed harmony to create a series of enticing, sensual immersive environments — a sanctuary in this crazy world.
Squidsoup is a Uk-based international group of artists, researchers, technologists and designers working with digital and interactive media projects. They combine physical and dynamic digital spaces with novel and intuitive forms of interaction to produce immersive, responsive and beguiling experiences. Their works have been seen by millions of people across the globe, in art galleries and live events, festivals and solo exhibitions. In 2022, as part of the SNFCC Light Installation Festival, they presented their work Submergence.
