This painting, produced when Sugiyama was 68, depicts the moment just before two Japanese cranes land on frozen earth. For this piece, Sugiyama made use of his sketching skills and the distinctive textures, or matières, he experimented with in his 1960s abstract paintings. The result is a fantastic and finely detailed image that evokes the natural world’s mysteries.
