These five wayang (leather puppets) characters are called the five Pandawa, meaning the five sons of Pandu, one of the kings of Astinapura in the Mahābhārata epic. The five Pandawa are protagonists, possessing good characteristics, and will go to war against Kurawa, who represent the evil antagonists. Each of them though has it's own, unique character traits.
The five Pandawa are:
1. Werkudoro, also known as Bima, is a symbol of bravery, resoluteness, strength, dutiful perseverance, obedience and honesty. His unique thumb nail, known as kuku pancanaka, is long and curved, and serves as a weapon to fight his enemies.
2. King Puntadewa, also known as Yudistira, a paragon of patience, sincerity, belief in the Almighty, is devoutly religious, grateful, just and honest. Yudistira is the eldest of the Pandawa and will, eventually, become king of Astinapura.
3. Janoko, also known as Arjuna, is ascetic and possesses magical powers. He is learned in many disciplines, intelligent, a man of few words, meticulous, courteous, courageous, gentle in demeanor and a protector of the weak.
4. Nakula is one of two twins. He is honest, faithful, devout, compassionate, grateful and a keeper of secrets. Together with his twin, Sadewo, he is the personal protector and companion of his eldest brother, King Yudistira.
5. Sadewo, Nakula's twin, is a charter of wisdom, a mystic and also the companion of King Yudistira.
