Rotterdam, Netherlands

Around 1650, it became fashionable in the Netherlands to fill whole walls of a room with landscape paintings. It is known that Adam Pijnacker also painted such wall coverings. Considering the dimensions of this 'Italianising landscape with lobster fishers', the depiction with its calculated decorative effect and the broad brush strokes must have been part of a wall covering, probably for an Amsterdam patrician house.

  • Artist Information: Adam Pijnacker or Pynacker travelled to Italy in 1645 and stayed there until 1648. Pijnacker presumably travelled to the south for trade. He probably only started his painting career after returning to the Netherlands. The earliest work dates from 1650. He became one of the most important Italianates, together with Jan Both, Nicolaes Berchem and Jan Asselyn. In 1656, Pijnacker moved to Schiedam and in 1661 to Amsterdam. In this period, his landscapes became more dramatic and his canvases became larger.
