"The son of a frame-maker and art dealer from Antwerp, De Moor studied with Gerrit Dou, the leader of the Leiden fijnschilders, or fine-painters. De Moor was also a prominent member of the Leiden painters' guild and the Leiden Drawing Academy.

He painted genre scenes and narrative paintings but increasingly came to specialise in portraiture. Here, the boy holds a flagon that has been used as a bird's nest. Bird-pots were usually placed under a building's eaves to encourage them to nest. "

  • Work Notes: Smith no. 7 (same as HDG no. 127) may be identical with 116; Smith records a pedigree from the Zaamens coll. in 1767 up to–but not beyond–1811, and much of the description tallies (goldfinch perched on the child's finger), but other details do not agree ie. M. Zaamens, 1767; M. Braamcamp, 1771; M. Locquet, 1783.The same figure appears in reverse and in full-length holding a puppy in a copy sold London, Sotheby's, 16 Mar. 1993, lot 99.   • Further Information: Gudlaugsson's attribution to De Moor (on photograph mount, Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague) is supported by the presence of a De Moor signature on a comparable child study of a boy playing with a puppy, in which the model appears to be the same (sold Sotheby's Colonnade, 16/19 March 1993, lot 99).
