Vincent van Gogh made this painting while he was treated for his psychiatric problems. He stayed in a clinic in the southern French town of Saint-Rémy. For a short period of time, Vincent was reluctant to go outside. He continued to paint, however, as soon as he felt well enough. Van Gogh repeatedly took shoes as his subject.
