The Schluesselfelder ship, which got its name from the patrician Nuremberg family that owned it, is not a model. It is a representative, precious centrepiece made of gilded silver, the purpose of which was first to demonstrate the wealth of its owner, but also to provide the dinner guests with a topic of conversation. The sumptuous goldsmith’s work is an accurate and lively representation of a three-mast carrack with crew and passengers. The precise sculptural work is testament to the outstanding artisanal and artistic talents of the Nuremberg workshop that produced it.
