During the 1910's Petrov-Vodkin were influential in the St. Petersburg's arts scene as a member of artist group "The World of Art". He developed a strong personal idiom, where he manages to reconcile the classical painting with modern trends. “The Worker” is from the same year as Petrov-Vodkins most famous work "The red horse is watered." Both works show the artist's technical prowess and his ability to run the simplification to the utmost, without leaving his naturalistic approach to art. In “The Worker” one can also clearly see how Petrov-Vodkin brings out the red, blue and yellow color which for him had a strong symbolic meaning.
