Plaza del Rey

Francesc Gimeno i Arasa1896

Fundación Banco Santander

Fundación Banco Santander
Madrid, Spain

This work dates back to one of Gimeno’s most creative periods. It shows the Plaça del Rei in Barcelona, as seen from the former staircase to the Santa Águeda Royal Palace; this was mostly built by Jaime II in the first quarter of the 14th century, although it was finished at a later date. At the right-hand side of the canvas is a Neo-Gothic fountain, designed by master builder Josep Mas Vila in 1853 and subsequently demolished in 1935.

Other examples of this subject in Gimeno’s work include the oil painting of the same name, described by Cortés1 and exhibited under No. 16 in the wide-ranging exhibition celebrating Gimeno, which was held in the Galería Dau al Set of Barcelona in November 1978.
