This is one half of the double-page painting that introduces a copy of the Sulayman-nama (Book of Solomon). On the top tier sits the prophet Sulayman (the biblical Solomon, son of David), beneath the Gate of Salutation, the main entrance to the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. On the lower tiers are the orders of mankind and the jinn. The poem was composed by Firdawsi of Bursa for the Ottoman sultan Bayezid II (r. 1481-1512), and the manuscript likewise was produced for him.
