In 1877 Hill was again refused by the Salon. He spent part of the spring at Bois-le-Roi, where he painted the fruit trees in bloom. He also produced a number of paintings after the manner of Claude Lorrain, on themes of classical tranquility, entitled “The Tree and the River”. These were followed in the autumn of 1877, by a number of works of a literary, symbolic nature, such as the painting “Sister Anna”. Hill’s working pace grew steadily more hectic that autumn, partly with the 1878 Exposition Universelle in mind; but of the eighteen works he submitted, only one was accepted.

  • Artist Information: Carl Fredrik Hill came of an academic family and was born in Lund in 1849. Hill ranks today as one of Sweden’s foremost landscape artists through the ages. During four very intensive years in France (1873-78), he produced a large number of landscape paintings of striking originality. These scenes, of environs of Paris, betray the influence of contemporary French art – the Barbizon school and Impressionism above all – but at the same time demonstrate how he was able to amalgamate those impressions with a profoundly personal expression. In January 1878 Carl Fredrik Hill developed schizophrenia, and this greatly transformed his pictorial world. His drawings and paintings from the long years of his illness (fron 1878 to 1911) give us an insight into a completely new world in which inward fantasy, experiences of various kinds, influences derived from previous works, early art and illustrations from art history textbooks, or travel stories by Jules Verne and other authors were a source of inspiration. Carl Fredrik Hill never achieved in his own lifetime the fame which he prized so greatly. Not until after his death in 1911 did the spotlight of attention begin to focus on his achievement, through exhibitions in Sweden and abroad, and in art history research.
