Lovelace (1618-1658) was a Cavalier poet who served under Charles I during the Civil War.
He was twice imprisoned by the Roundheads when he wrote his most famous lines:
Stone walls do not a prison make,
nor iron bars a cage.
Dulwich Picture Gallery possesses a group of Lovelace family portraits, all bequeathed by William Cartwright.

- Further Information: Richard Lovelace (1617-c.1657) was a cavalier soldier, poet and friend of Sir Peter Lely who served in the Scottish expeditions in 1639. He was imprisoned in 1642 (when he wrote the song 'Stone walls do not a prison make') and re-joined the King at Oxford in 1645. He then fought for the French at the siege of Dunkirk in 1646. He was again imprisoned in 1648-9, after which he worked on the publication of his collected poetry, which appeared under the title 'Lucasta' in 1649. DPG363 is regarded by M. Rogers as an autograph work by Dobson of c. 1645/6.
